Welcome to Vienna! Known for its cultural events, imperial sights, coffee houses, cozy wine taverns, and the very special Viennese charm.
“It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas!”
While we didn’t have our first snow in Vienna like we had hoped, that didn’t stop us from getting into the festive spirit. Never in my life have I seen so many lights! The high end shopping district had HUGE chandeliers hanging across the avenues, and every side street had its own theme of hundreds of thousands of lights.
I finally broke out the Christmas music, champagne, and all of the cozy clothes. I love love love the holidays and experiencing it in Europe is so much fun!
I’ve had a lot of questions about where we will be for Christmas and the truth is, we’re not entirely sure. But its looking like London which would be really exciting!
The Hofburg
Our trip to Vienna fell perfectly into the calendar as they came out of a full 24-7 lockdown on December 6 and we arrived the next day. Although we couldn’t attend the ballet or the opera, we were so excited to find out that a few museums were open and we took full advantage.
The Hofburg (pictured here with Niya) is the official residence and workplace of the President of Austria and was formerly the principal imperial palace of the Habsburg dynasty. The Habsburgs were one of the most influential and distinguished royal houses of Europe maintaining rule from 1440 to 1806.
Inside the Hofburg is the National Library which Dave was excited to see because they had an exhibition on Mozart and had his original sheet music and his death mask. The ceilings were covered with gold leaf and frescos surrounding the 12 million publications the room holds.
Also inside the Hofburg is the Sisi Museum. The museum has preserved the Imperial Apartments of past rulers and holds bedrooms, studies, ballrooms, and dining rooms filled with furniture, china, clothing, and everything you could possible imagine.
Even though restaurants weren’t open, we didn’t miss the chance for a kiosk brat and brew! We also had our first Weiner schnitzel!
We had such a great time in beautiful Vienna and are hoping to go back in the Spring when the weather is warmer and more cultural activities and restaurants are open. Now on to another beautiful and cultured city, Prague.
