Before we get started…No, we did not see George Clooney. And trust me, I looked!!
Ok, for real – if quiet beauty is your thing, Lake Como is the right spot for you. Start with water as clear and calm as glass, scatter in some terra-cotta rooftop towns at the shores, and finish with huge mountains that fade into shades of blue as they get farther away and you’ve got a recipe for R&R.
When it comes to perfect places for Dave and I, it always involves some body of water. For him it’s the ocean and for me it’s lakes. Lake Como reminding me of growing up on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire, and after being away from home for a month it was a breath of fresh air. There is just something about quiet lake waters that calm my soul.

Like the Three Little Bears, Varenna was JUST right!
There are several towns on the lake and they’re all pretty different ranging from quiet and sleepy to bustling and lively. The nice thing is you can hop on a ferry and in just 15 minutes you can bounce around to get a little variety.
We stayed in Varenna on the Eastern side of the lake and couldn’t have been happier. It was the perfect balance of a quiet fishing village that had phenomenal authentic restaurants. If lots of shops, restaurants, and grand hotels are of interest I would recommend staying in Como, Bellagio, or Tremezzo. For a quieter experience consider staying in Domaso, Cadenabbia, and Gravedona. And if you want a little bit of both then Varenna or Bellano would be a great choice.
Silvio
By recommendation we ate at Silvio in Bellagio, and it was pure romance. Over looking the lake under twinkle lights and a cool breeze was the perfect way to enjoy a phenomenal bottle of Montepulciano, white fish from the lake, and fresh made pasta for dinner.
After being gone from friends and family for so long taking a break on Lake Como has been good for my soul. I absolutely love traveling the world, but there’s nothing like home and this has given me just enough to keep going.
