Flora Farms

Over the river and through the woods to Flora Farms we go – a 25 acre organic working farm in the foothills of the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico.

Farm Life

No need for a grocery store here folks, everything you need is right on the farm. Your first morning coffee is made from beans grown on the farm, and the cream comes from the cows that live on the farm. Toast is from freshly baked breads with jam made from farm strawberries, honey from bees in the apiary, and butter from those same dairy cows. For lunch, heaping piles of spicy arugula simply dressed with olive oil, salt and pepper, or tomatoes and burrata from – yes, you guessed it, the farm.

And the best part about all of this, is the picking privileges you have to roam the farm in search of anything and everything your heart desires. There is truly nothing like waking up in the morning to the sounds of the birds and going out into the rows, pajama clad, looking for tomatoes, basil, or whatever else you’d want in your breakfast omelette. The idea that the freshest, healthiest, safest ingredients are right at your fingertips is heavenly. My favorites were deciding which shiny leafy green lettuce to have for lunch and watching Dave throw together a bowl of rainbow color vegetables for dinner.

Don’t Worry, Bee Happy!

Speaking of food from the farm, we couldn’t pass up a chance to meet the bees.

The visit to the apiary was extra special because all 20 hives had just been moved to a new area of the farm and were being kept private until they settled in. Dave was over the moon when they made an exception for him knowing how much he loves bees.

He got to shadow Angie, the head beekeeper, for the morning and learned new tips and tricks for caring for his bees. He even helped out for his first harvest experience. It was a real full circle experience to be on the farm seeing the bees feed off of the Thai Basil blossoms by our pool and in the flowers by the spa. Realizing that those same bees would fly back to the hives to bee hard at work to make the very same honey in this jar.

I was particularly grateful for this as I enjoyed it on a freshly toasted piece of bread and jam. The honey was unlike any I had ever tasted. It was so fresh and sweet, we just couldn’t get enough of it and polished off the whole jar before we left.

And if you don’t feel like cooking for your meals, no worries, you just walk yourself down to Flora’s Field Kitchen for the ultimate “farm to table” experience. And when I say farm to table I mean literally, farm to table because you’re sitting amongst the fruits and vegetables that have been harvested only hours ago to create your meal. The menu also features animals that live of their 150-acre ranch where they are humanely raised on diets that don’t include hormones or antibiotics. Although Dave and I eat little to no meat we appreciated the fact that they don’t offer beef as it is not sustainable and not enough water in Baja to support them.

And there’s lots more to do than just eat at Flora Farms. You can come visit and peruse the Shops or participate in dozens of Farm Experiences like tours, cooking classes, summer movie nights, and live music.

I of course shopped!

We spent so much of our time on the farm just relaxing and enjoying the landscape around us. The sounds of birds were music to our ears, and eyes because they were constantly hopping and flying around. Especially the hummingbirds which seemed to be every where you turned. And don’t even get me started on the smells! Rosemary, Thai Basil, and Lemongrass were always wafting in the air while we were sitting by the pool. Jasmine and wild flowers on our walks down to the restaurant, and vine ripened tomatoes or earthy greens as we picked our meals in the rows upon rows of vegetables.

But let’s be serious, you can’t come to Cabo and not go to the beach! And lucky for us Flora Farms just expanded a few minutes down the road and now offers Beach Front Flats, so we managed to peel ourselves away from our desert oasis to hit the warm waters of the Baja. And along the way we ran into a few new friends – a family of donkeys that wasted no time to stop our car to come say Hola, including the fuzziest little baby.

When we got to the beach we made the most out of the day by doing exactly what you should do – a whole bunch of nothing. The waves were so huge and the rip tide was so strong that we didn’t get a chance to swim, but we more than made up for it in the infinity pool and you guessed it…long walks on the beach.

Desert Hike

My favorite part of the whole trip was our desert hike, guided by Enrique. The terrain was unlike anything I’ve ever seen, and surprisingly more beautiful than I expected. Learning about the harsh desert and how cactus, plants, and animals persevere in the dry and arid landscape was inspiring. That how despite few advantages and many threats they still manage to hang on.

I had some very quiet and reflective moments on the hike that really gave me pause. I thought about all of the young men, women, and children that endure the blistering heat without shade or water, tirelessly walking through this same unforgiving land coming to the US for a better, safer life. The fear and feelings of uncertainty that must plague them minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day.

The idea that they’re journey lasts days longer than the few hours I managed to hang on was unfathomable to me. Although I was tired, hungry, bone dry thirsty, and sore I was determined to not say a peep out of respect for those who suffer so much more than I do. This hike will always remind me that sometimes you literally have to walk a mile in someone else shoes to understand where they’re coming from.

I consider myself incredibly lucky to have travelled the world, but this was unlike any other trip. Living amongst natural in such a raw and authentic way was truly special. I highly recommend visiting the farm should you ever make your way over to Cabo.

Dave and I wanted to say a very special Thank You to our friends Anna and Nelson who hosted on this wonderful trip. They bought into this little slice of heaven a decade ago and were so kind to share it with us. We enjoyed all of the things each and every one of us has missed over this last year – coffee with friends, listening to music and grilling with friends, and oh yeah…hugging friends!
