Getting Here!
The unique landscape of Venice is comprised of 118 intricately connected islands by the various canals systems. We parked our car on the mainland at a garage in Mestre and took the train across the water to get to the island. Once you arrive you then have the option to rent a private boat or hop on the water taxis down the Grand Canal that will take you deeper into the city to the different neighborhoods.
Here today “Gondola” tomorrow!
While a Gondola would have been the most iconic mode of transportation, Niya’s center of gravity wasn’t a good match for the little boats. Instead we rented a wooden boat to take us down the canals and it ended up being the perfectly relaxing and luxe experience we were looking for.
Tip: The Gondolas aren’t cheap! The local government regulates the price of $80 euros during the day and $120 during sunset. However, in true hustle form the Gondoliers were willing to negotiate down to a lower rate.

San Marco’s Square
Lined with amazing restaurants, San Marco is the perfect place to sit and have a glass of wine while listening to the Basilica bells ring. The Venice Film Festival was going on while we were visiting so the square was bustling at night with string quartets, pianos playing, and signers. Add some twinkle lights, velvety arm chairs, waiters in tuxedos and you’ve got a recipe for one romantic night!
When our quick trip to Venice was over we passed through Milan for a night before heading up to Lake Como. If you ever visit I highly recommend staying the neighborhood of Brera. It’s located just off the Piazza di Duomo and is largely pedestrian only and is home to the cities best shopping and restaurants.
After lots of uncertainty in the past week getting into Italy we’re heading up to Lake Como for some serious R&R.
